Break Up the Day

By Luis Cuauhtemoc Berriozabal

Break Up the Day

Nothing is easy
as you grow too old
to do the things that
you used to do. In
time you learn to do
away things that once
seemed important as
you let love fade off.
In an empty house
you perfect things like
the lonely tear and
amplified sobbing.
You break up the day
by reading, watching
tv, and jotting
down your daily thoughts.
You are caught smiling
by the mirror in
the bathroom as you
shave the gray away.
Despair takes a break.
You do not think of
things out of your reach.
A glass of water,
beer, or wine quenches
your thirst and your dry
lips. You breathe in and
out. A sliver of hope
finds its way in your
thoughts. As you dream it
all seems so vivid.
