Essential Workers

By Frederick Foote

Essential Workers

Look at the heroes in the fields tending the crops
and the truckers delivering them to the food processor,
the distributor, the retailer, and the clerks who stock the shelves,
sell the goods, bag the purchases, and open and close the stores
and fast-food and government workers and sanitation workers.

Warriors, heroes all without mask, gloves, or gowns, but
with families and loved ones who deserve better and safer
and hazardous duty pay and stars on the Walk of Fame and statues
in the city center, and thanks and prayers.
