Do Our Tears Haunt You?

By John Tustin

Do Our Tears Haunt You?

Do our tears haunt you?
Do the memories taunt you?
Do you ever wonder how much you changed our lives?
Buzzing on our own in these crowded desperate hives.
I wonder about you and how your world must be
Do you wake in obliviousness or misery?
Some days I smell that night and wish it wasn't real.
But I won't give you that power -- my joy you cannot steal.

What I will trade you is forgiveness for the pain you have given.
Trying to scribble over what cannot be unwritten.
While I try to undo you, knowing it's in vain.
I can't imagine what it's like to truly be insane.
I hope one day you're better and see the carnage you have brought.
And look into the eyes of the ghosts you have sought.
And when they come to haunt you tell them to forgive
And be shamed by their forgiveness for as long as you may live.
