Adventure Remains

By Christopher Fried

Adventure Remains

Swashbuckler, rogue, and hero hesitant
sometimes, become the power of playtime
where we remember scenes and don’t supplant
with louder action-packed fare. At bedtime
we fell asleep to read-along cassettes
as stories played through and then were reset.

Back when you had a smirk, the feeling still
had charm that fluttered women’s hearts, and made
their husbands proud as men again, while thrills
enraptured beaming children as they swayed
from side to side in seats. See what a joy
it was to have such effects but not cloy!

But you’ve changed now, and still, I don’t blame you
as much as I could try. It’s likely not
your fault that the good roles have become few
or that the good roles rest in wretched plots.
There’s comfort knowing that the blaster, whip,
fedora, and much more remains as hip.
