Brighton Beach Nights

By Rp Verlaine

Brighton Beach Nights

We would drive
to the beach
close enough to taste
it in the air.
It was our refuge
our sanctuary
with high school barely
behind us.

Our escape
from low paying jobs
living with our parents
and friends who did
not always have
our better interests.

Sometimes I'm transported
again to her car. Inhibitions
always at low tide.
How we'd talk absurdities:
Flying saucers, fairies
Arabian nights/quitting
cigarettes/whiskey
and moviesAd hock to
Ad lib/absurdity
of each kiss taking
longer to twist
to an ending.

Weed's
pungent perfume
overwhelmed the almost
rank stirrings of
our disappearing fast
food. We'd be so
stoned in this comedy
that all we knew...
is the salt taste of
our eager flesh
was just perfect
after Tequila.

No Tequila after that
has ever been as good.
