As We Waited for Chris

By Donna Dallas

As We Waited for Chris

To come jingling in
full beard
full belly
packed with gifts galore

Some untainted moon
settled in the sky
we believed
was meant for us
a long-winded howl
cracked open sound itself
as the trees bellowed back and forth
defying gravity

Still the moon glowed full orange
as we waited
and thought how would Santa
ever get out of here
let alone enter

They say the strongest trees bend with the wind
under the silent moon
a crisp twinkle
toasty fireplace
time calls his name over a whale’s moan
in the deep blue of eternity
Santa is coming my dear
