Mile High Stadium

By Jim Bates

Mile High Stadium

1969 open-air concert
Creedence, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter
Tim Buckley a favorite
Hitchhiking under hot Colorado skies
Freezing cold iced lemonade
Stringing colorful beads to trade
Long-haired hippy guys playing Frisbee
Long-haired hippy girls smiling and mellow
Leather headbands and white cotton peasant skirts
A soft sunset painting the sky purple red and orange
Music about to begin crowds surge at the gate
Angry police shoot off tear gas canisters
Clouds of smoke drifting people running coughing sick and heaving.

Later peace is restored among the cops and hippies
Music the great equalizer
A friend drops acid
Flower children dance to the groovy beat
Full moon rises bright in the east
Creedence Clearwater Revival Chugglin’
No one wants to leave no one does
A new day dawns and then again and again
Suddenly sixty years have passed
And the music still plays on deep in his soul
Never-ending
Unforgettable.
