Basket Case

By Ndaba Sibanda

Basket Case

There was little effort or action against it
That the state was stealing from taxpayers
And investors was something that reeked
Under the very noses of big police officers
But they had to protect their 'clean' legacy
With a morsel of deception and diplomacy
Never mind there were whispers of restlessness
From the poor citizens and anti-corruption souls
Their marches were condemned and snuffed out
The trashed economy sneezed a collapsing cackle
As the flames of the land 'revolution' were doused
Never mind their good intentions -- the seized tracts
Were converted into playgrounds of chaotic idleness
Food basket turned into nothing but a basket case
To unknot a case of joblessness, hunger and corruption
Calls for hunters and a hunger for integrity and loyalty
