"Mes de los Muertos"

grew a new heart

By Linda M. Crate

grew a new heart

you wanted a doll you could shatter,
but once you break me down i will only
rise from the chaos of the ashes
because you cannot kill a phoenix soul
we always rise again;
our feathers with more vibrant and hotter flames --
i will not lose my voice, my magic, or my
power to anyone;
always i will rise again
because there are so many people who know
to only live once but i have shed my past like snakeskin
and i grow stronger without the anchors
of the past tethering me to my pain --
you may think that you've won,
but there was never any battle when you threw
my broken heart into that coffin;
i grew a new heart and clawed my way out
like a zombie because i knew i had things to do
things i couldn't let you stop me from achieving and a person to
become that you could never destroy.
