Under the Volcano

By Wayne F. Burke

Under the Volcano

the luminous wheel turns: Ferris wheel,
Zodiac, infernal machine, in contrapuntal
delirium tremens style, symbolism strewn
like billboards along the roadside -- and
how about that taxing Taxcala chapter?!
How about Yvonne, fluttering like a butterfly
about the plot, and Hugh the fatuous brother-in-law
and 'man of ideas,' who survives, while Senior Consul
dies, borracho, face down in Mehico, a victim or
volunteer, who knows: he goes into the barranca like
a pariah dog -- like the world --1939 -- one of the great days,
this Day of the Dead: not a Bloom's Day, but close.
