We Need You

By Pranab Ghosh

We Need You

Surveys ‘come and go’
And…
They too talk of ‘Michelangelo’?

Did you ‘measure’ them
With ‘coffee spoon’?

Do you walk with your
‘Pants rolled up’
And…
Write love songs
Dreaming about ‘them’?

They are…
And
They are more
Than what they are…

Dream stuff.
They are dream merchants…
Fashion gurus…
IT mavericks…
Chocolate makers…
Bio-tech giants…

They are our employers…
Job creators…
Entrepreneurs…?!

Yes! Yes! Yes!

And we need more of them
Around us…

More of them…

To live happily ever after!

Author’s note: The poem is based on a news feature, ‘Girl Power’, published in Hindustan Times, dated March 9, 2010, written by this poet. The story had reference to a survey, “Marketing Achievements and the Challenges Faced by Women Entrepreneurs: Delhi & NCR”, released in 2009 by FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) in collaboration with Hanns Seidei Foundation of Germany. According to figures mentioned in the survey quoting Census findings, in 1981 there used to be 5.2 percent self-employed women in the country. The figure was 11.2 percent in 2001. If the trend continued there would be 20 percent women entrepreneurs in next 10 years, the survey predicted. Today, however, as per my preliminary net research, 13.76 percent of the total entrepreneurs in India are women.
