Savory Fingers

By Dharmpal Mahendra Jain

Savory Fingers

While standing behind you,
I have seen you working diligently
in the kitchen
transforming the plain ingredients
into delicious dishes.

Personally, I do not have a fondness for salt.
It is brackish and bitter.
Nor do I enjoy pepper,
it is unappetizing to both my eyes and tongue.
Turmeric is especially unpleasant
for me to consume,
as I was coated with it before our wedding,
and despite my best efforts,
I was unable to remove it.
It has a unpalatable medicinal taste,
I would never willingly take a bite.

With a pinch of salt
placed on top of a bit of pepper,
followed by asafetida, cumin, coriander,
and other similarly tasteless spices
you perform a magical show.
With your deft fingers moving like that of a magician,

you manage to create
culinary delights while humming.
Even my fingers become infused
with a delicious taste then.
