Oh Things That We've Both Been Through

By H.L. Dowless

Oh, Things That We've Both Been Through

Oh,
The things that we’ve been through,
We’ve both said things and done things
That nearly broke us in two,
But like the sun to the sky,
Still we both remain true.

Oh,
The railroad shack that we live in
Has often made you so blue.
Babe,
There were times when I thought
We were through,
But the thought of losing you just
Broke my poor heart in two.

That woman who was talking to me
Down at the town library,
Put a glare in your eyes
lady,
That really looked scary,
But I could clearly see that indeed
Right with you is really where I want
To tarry.

So I bought the old stone castle on
That Burgundy seaside hill;
This sure turned you on more than the cedar cabin
Down by the old grist mill.
I’m making fifty runs of shine a day
And have the hollows
From Bergoo all the way to Myrtle
Filled with my forty gallon moonshine stills,
Just so you can have things your way!

Oh,
The things that we’ve been through,
And the places we’ve both traveled to,
I declare they’ve caused me to do things
Honey,
I swear I ne’er thought I’d do!
Even though at times we drift so far away
To this day some twenty years later
Our hearts remain true.

I fought the shinner’s Battle of Summer’s County
So I could fulfill my obligations to you.
Babe,
Forever my heart and mind shall remain true,
And from this day forever
I say
Time has made us promise we’ll both stick like good ole
Goat hoof glue.

The song moved in my mind
Babe,
With the passage of time,
And it plays in perfect rhyme
With the whine
Of the old Chicago number nine.
It fits exactly
Since we both always loved the scenery
Through the long mountain tunnels
And the deep ravines covered by Ponderosa pines.
