Contests: Piker Press Poetry Open

By Cheryl Haimann

We have space now for more verse
In the Piker Press, so
Grab a pencil from your purse,
Steam up some espresso.

Write a poem, short or long,
Thoughtful, sad, or funny,
Make it tender, brash, or strong,
Serious or punny.

The Piker Press Poetry Open is accepting submissions through March 31. Winners will be announced in April during National Poetry Month.

All types of poetry are eligible, from the ridiculous to the sublime. Head judge Sublime has no preference regarding rhymed, metrical, or free verse, but likes strong, memorable images, and hates having to Babelfish epigrams in foreign languages. Emergency backup judge for tie-breakers, Ridiculous, likes doggerel and winkie jokes. No one said this would be easy.

Think you can't write poetry? Then check out the "Poetry for Pikers" series to learn about poetry forms that don't require you to have an MFA.
